Your Business At Risk:
New anti-bribery legislation will soon be with us. The Bribery Bill introduced into Parliament will ensure the UK is at the forefront of the battle against bribery and pave the way for fairer practice by encouraging businesses to adopt anti-bribery safeguards.

It is a criminal offence to give, promise or offer a bribe and to request, agree to receive or accept a bribe either at home or abroad.

It is a corporate offence to fail to prevent bribery by persons working on behalf of a business.

A business can avoid conviction if it can show that ithas adequate procedures in place to prevent bribery.

The SFO strongly supports the new legislation which will strengthen its existing powers:

"To help combat the harm corruption can bring we are moving significant skills into our specialist Anti-Corruption Domain, and are in the process of developing these skills further with an extensive training programme. We are leading the way in fighting corruption and have had some  recent successes in combattingoverseas corruption. Of particular note is the SFO's approach to the self-reporting regime. A recent success of the self reporting regime is the case of Mabey and Johnson .... But this is just the start, we shall be using all of the tools at our disposal in identifying and prosecuting cases".
(Mabey and Johnson incurred fines and sanctions totalling £6m)

"Bribery  eats away at the heart of both business  and public  life and has no place in British commerce.  It blights free and fair competition  and a dds to the cost  of  doing business"
Justice Secretary and anti-corruption champion Jack Straw
